City warns of phone scam

May 31, 2022 | 3:42 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The City of Medicine Hat is warning residents not to give credit card information over the phone to people posing as city staff.

The warning comes after residents reported receiving a call yesterday from an imposter claiming they had unpaid utility bills.

Angela Smith, supervisor of customer care and billing said if utilities are overdue, the city would never contact someone for payment by phone. Instead they would send either an email or letter with a disconnect warning.

” We want customers to know that we would never ask for someones credit card information over the phone for their utilities or taxes. If they got a call like this we ask that they hang up and call the department directly,” she said.

The city department can be reached at 403-529-8111.

Smith noted that with property taxes mailed out, residents will likely see more of these scams.

If you do end up receiving a phone call, Smith said to only contact police if you gave your credit card or personal information away.
