MEDICINE HAT, AB – Steve Sox isn’t your run of the mill hockey fan. He’s who some would call an absolute diehard. Sox has been a fan of the Calgary Flames since the late 80s. He had been collecting pieces here and there, but recalls the first piece of memorabilia he received which made him take his collection seriously.

“I got the Kiprusoff jersey with his name and number on it,” Sox says. “It was the first that started it. Heck of a goalie, he’s retired now obviously, but yeah, that was the first one.”

Sox has been collecting anything and everything he can find. He has amassed hundreds of different pieces, from jerseys and hockey sticks, to trading cards and figurines. He also only drives a red jeep, which makes him very recognizable around the community. Sox hasn’t been shy to show people his collection.

“I just, enjoy it,” Sox says. “I’ve had to show quite a few people my video- I have a video on my phone, and some people say ‘cool’, and some people say ‘oh, that’s alright’, some people say ‘did your wife let you have all that?”

His wife and family have been nothing but supportive of Sox, even adding to his growing collection, which has taken up every nook and cranny of the basement.

“[It’s been] great, great. They come to the games sometimes with me,” Sox says. “I go to 11, 12 games a year, so drive up, drive home and yeah, they’ve been really supportive. She’s bought some of this stuff here for me and usually from the kids I’ll get Christmas, birthday or anniversary, just little trinkets and stuff.”

Sox always looks forward to game days, and the playoff series with the Edmonton Oilers makes the atmosphere even more electric.

“[It’s] exciting. Sometimes the family comes over or friends and there’s a lot of yelling and the kids come down and they can watch a game, and there’s little trinkets on my ledge they can play with. I’ve got cowbells, I’ve got the horn. They can watch and the Bud Light lights up.” Sox says.

Sox hopes the Flames can make it all the way to the Stanley Cup.

“I’d like to try and go up and go to a couple, maybe two, who knows? We’ll try, but I mean, I have much fun down here. As you can see in the room, it’s exciting to be down here, and I’m pretty excited all around. I’ll drive around town and I blow my horn a little bit and I drive around with my flag on my truck.”
