MEDICINE HAT, AB – Monsignor McCoy High School teacher Kimmy Orr can’t smile much more than when she talks about the kids in her production arts class.

She and 20 students are one day from bringing “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” to the stage.

“Doing a musical is not a small feat so to be so young and to be in high school and also even to work with peers, it’s really difficult to be vulnerable in that sense among your peers and even to direct them and tell them instructions and things like that,” , said Orr, who is also the director. “So I am incredibly humbled by this experience to watch them come and enjoy and build a community and to take ownership and leadership over this experience.”

The semester began with the students in the class each taking a turn at all duties involved in staging a musical.

“Then once they find something they’re really enjoying and everything, we start specializing,” she says.

On stage, Orr says the comedic musical sees six quirky adolescents compete in the spelling bee, run by three equally quirky grown-ups. Performers break the fourth wall and there are playful musical numbers and signs as excitement and tension build until the champion is revealed.

McCoy is presenting the show from the Medicine Hat Musical Theatre Playhouse. It’s taken the show and what the students can learn to the next level.

Orr calls the building amazing.

“Incredible lighting and incredible soundboard and it’s a really good size and atmosphere for them and it’s a privilege to work within this facility.”

Shows are Friday and Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at the playhouse.

Tickets are available at the Mccoy office or on the school’s website.
