Owner of Dunmore gun store speaks about break-in, concerns with security system

May 9, 2022 | 10:53 AM

DUNMORE, AB – The owner of a firearms store in Dunmore has numerous questions about last week’s break-in at his operation, including why his security system didn’t give more warning of the crime.

Rocky Rutledge says the Canadian GunHub was broken into at about 2:30 a.m. on May 5 when someone backed a stolen vehicle through a rear door.

The suspect made their way to the front of the store, passing sensors and cameras along the way.

But Rutledge says only one sensor picked up any movement and he didn’t see anything on his cameras when he checked.

He says about $30,000 worth of weapons were stolen, all of them handguns, and more than 30 weapons were taken.

Rutledge says other weapons that could be more dangerous, were left untouched. The reason only handguns were taken remains unclear.

“Perhaps the people who broke in had a buyer for these, I don’t know. This was the item they were definitely after but every single one of those guns is registered with the government,” Rutledge told CHAT News. “The serial number is trackable. Every part of those guns is trackable. Only need one gun to surface and very great chances of leading to the rest.”

Rutledge says this is the first time in almost seven years of operation the store has been broken into.

RCMP say the stolen vehicle used in the break-in has been recovered and is missing its rear bumper. Police have not said if they have any suspects in the break-in.
