MEDICINE HAT, AB — People looking to stay at the Gas City Campground will have more options this season.

Federal stimulus money allowed the city to convert several sites in the southeast part of the campground to full-service last summer.

The upgrades also saw the addition of two comfort cabins, which are expected to be ready by the middle of next month, if not sooner.

Though the city has not been actively promoting the cabins, interest has been strong and bookings are already in place past the middle of June.

Scott Richter, recreation manager for the City of Medicine Hat parks and recreation department, says higher fuel costs this summer may also encourage local people to take advantage of the Gas City campground.

“We have quite a number of people that really enjoy camping locally, within 50-kilometre range so it’s not too bad in terms of who we draw,” says Richter.

However, he adds “I think the long-distancee haulers from Texas and California might be a bit of a stretch this year.”

Richter says the additions of a fenced off-leash area for dogs and new mountain bike trails adjacent to the Gas City Campground are further incentives to draw people to the facility.
