Hatters Help Ukraine finding new homes for Ukrainian families

May 4, 2022 | 4:02 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The devastation of the Ukrainian city of Mariupol has caused many families to lose everything they own. That was enough for some members of the community to step up and do something.

Hatters Help Ukraine is a group of volunteers, charities and organizations working together to bring families to Medicine Hat from the war torn city. Chris Christie volunteers with the group, and says the families being brought over are hoping for new beginnings in the country.

“The families we’ve identified have all been very strongly committed to remaining in Canada,” Christie says. “They want to move here and start a new life because they’ve lost everything.”

Teachers, engineers and massage therapist are among the professions of members of the four families the group is helping relocate to Medicine Hat. George Kovalev is assisting with logistics and immigration for these families. He says the goal is to make sure these families are provided with as much as they can.

“Our goal is to bring them in here, settle them so they can figure on their own,” Kovalev says. “I have about two pages of addresses of people who wants to get donations for us.”

If you would like to donate to the cause or want more information about volunteering, you can contact them by email at hattershelpukraine@gmail.com, or visit their Facebook page.
