Alert Ready to conduct public notice test on Wednesday

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Expect to get an alert on your phone Wednesday.

On May 4, Alert Ready will broadcast a public test of the National Public Alerting System across most provinces and territories. Alberta is included in that group.

Canadians will receive one test message from their respective provincial or territorial emergency management organization over television, radio and compatible wireless devices. In Alberta, this is set to occur at 1:55 p.m. local time.

The broadcast schedule across the country is as listed below:

• Alberta: 1:55 PM MDT
• British Columbia: 1:55 PM MDT
• New Brunswick: 10:55 AM ADT
• Newfoundland & Labrador: 10:55 AM NDT
• Northwest Territories: 9:55 AM MDT
• Nunavut: 2:00 PM EDT
• Prince Edward Island: 12:55 PM ADT
• Saskatchewan: 1:55 PM CST
• Yukon: 1:55 PM PDT

The test will not be conducted in Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario, or Quebec.

The test message will simulate an emergency alert, starting with the alert tone, known as the Canadian Alert Attention Signal. The message will indicate that it is a test and does not require any action from the public. Testing the system provides an opportunity to validate the effectiveness and reliability.

In 2021, Alert Ready’s system allows authorities to deliver 173 public emergency alerts to Canadians. A breakdown of alert types that were issued by province and territory is available from Alert Ready.
