MEDICINE HAT, AB — A single-vehicle crash at the bottom of Scholten Hill late Sunday night, claimed the life of a 40-year-old male.

Medicine Hat Police Service says a westbound vehicle hit a power pole at South Railway Street and Factory Street at 10:11 p.m.

The name of the victim is not being released. According to police, the driver was the sole occupant of the Honda Civic, which suffered substantial damage.

The collision also caused substantial damage to the city’s electrical infrastructure, say police, resulting in a power outage for a large portion of the city. Power was out for an unknown number of homes in the River Flats neighbourhood for about two hours.

Total damage is estimated to be more than $30,000.

The MHPS Traffic Unit is investigating and says the roadway will remain closed until further notice.
