Ponds, Coulees & Creeks on display at TREX Space

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The natural landscape of southeast Alberta is on display downtown.

TREX Space is hosting Ponds, Coulees, and Creeks, a community-based art installation featuring 33 local artists. The entire exhibit was organized by members of Grassland Naturalists and the South East Alberta Watershed Alliance.

TREX approached Martha Munz Gue about organizing an art exhibit, and she reached out to the greater art community to help contribute pieces ranging from pottery to different styles of paintings.

“I sent invitations out to the art club, the pottery club and different artists in the community, ” Munz Gue says. “We have just been overjoyed with the response.”

Elaine Zimmer helped organize the installation with Munz Gue. Zimmer also provided a few pieces, which will be on display until June 14. Zimmer says you can find inspiration for art anywhere you look.

“Medicine Hat is wonderful for all of the wonderful walkways that there are, and all of the ability for green spaces,” Zimmer says. “The walks that you can take, and everything is right there at your feet if you don’t look up at the sky, it’s still there too.”

Munz Gue says she’s excited to see what it will mean to the community and passers-by.

“It’s open-ended,” Munz Gue says. “I’m waiting to see and I can hardly wait to find out.”

The community is able to come and enjoy the art exhibit, which is one of three on display in TREX Space. Genevieve Farrell is the curator for the space and says it was designed for travelling exhibits that could be featured in rural communities and public spaces. She says it’s a place to bring Alberta art to Albertans.

A public reception takes place this afternoon from 3 to 8 p.m., and the community is free to come and go as they please.
