Guilbeault asks Alberta minister Nixon to ‘correct’ column on emissions reduction

Apr 8, 2022 | 4:59 PM

EDMONTON — Federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault has written a letter to his Alberta counterpart to correct what he calls errors in Jason Nixon’s recent newspaper column.

Earlier this week, Alberta newspapers published an op-ed by Nixon in which he called the new federal plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions “insane.”

Nixon says the federal plan is an attempt to reduce oil and gas production and economic activity in Alberta.

In his letter, Guilbeault says Nixon misread a graph and got his facts wrong.

Guilbeault says the federal plan addresses emissions, not production, and industry can maintain or even increase its output as long as greenhouse gas levels go down.

A response from Nixon’s office was not immediately available.

Guilbeault says public debate can’t happen if officials distort the facts.
