Resurgence of COVID-19 underway in Saskatchewan, chief medical health officer says

Apr 7, 2022 | 4:19 PM

REGINA – Saskatchewan is experiencing a resurgence of COVID-19, but the province’s chief medical health officer says a sixth wave has not yet arrived.

Dr. Saqib Shahab says the resurgence of COVID-19 cases will likely last until mid-May or early June before cases start to level off.

He says Saskatchewan’s test positivity rate is about 13 per cent, meaning the risk of catching COVID-19 is moderate.

Shahab says hospitalizations in the province have risen 18 per cent in the past three weeks with 354 people in hospital, including 20 in intensive care.

Minister of Health Paul Merriman says while challenges remain within the health-care system due to a shortage of health-care workers and burnout, there’s still capacity for COVID-19 patients.

He says the provincial hospitals are 94 per cent full, with intensive care units at 74 per cent capacity.
