ATA calls Bill 15 a government power grab
Officials with the Alberta Teachers Association say Bill 15, the Education (Reforming Teacher Profession Discipline) Amendment Act, announced March 31, has three fundamental flaws.
ATA president Jason Schilling says the organization has come to that conclusion after conducting further analysis of the 130-page bill, which he notes the Association was given no information on in advance of its introduction.
Fundamental Flaw #1, according to the ATA: The bill is a massive power grab for the minister and the government.
ATA officials say cabinet hires and fires the commissioner; the minister writes the code of conduct and the Teaching Quality Standard; the minister appoints the hearing panel members and the chairs and vice-chairs. Finally, if the minister doesn’t like the outcome, she simply imposes a new one, says the ATA.
