Meals on Wheels needs volunteers

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The city’s Meals on Wheels program is facing an increase in clients and a call has gone out for volunteer drivers.

The service operates Monday to Friday, with drivers needed to deliver meals about one week each month.

Veiner Centre director Cori Fischer says Meals on Wheels serves between 100 and 130 people each day.

“In March we delivered over 2,500 meals and we’ve had 27 new clients sign up in the month as well,” adds Fischer.

Fischer says with the increase in numbers the routes are getting too big for one driver to manage.

Seven to eight volunteer drivers are needed to cover the routes on a daily basis, with casual drivers available to fill in where required.

In addition to delivering the meals, volunteer drivers are often the only contact with the client and serve as a wellness check and can report any issues that require a follow up.

With the price of fuel increasing, they’re also accepting donations to pay for gas cards to distribute to the volunteer drivers.

Those donations can be made in person at the Veiner Centre, or over the phone via credit card.
