MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Veiner Centre is decorated in blue and yellow Tuesday as the community comes together to raise money for the people of Ukraine.

A lunch was held this afternoon and a dinner will take place Tuesday evening. All 240 tickets were sold within 36 hours.

The fundraiser, called Veiner Centre Stands With Ukraine, only started to be planned two weeks ago. Besides the meals, a Ukrainian dance demo was performed as well as a presentation from Ukrainian-Canadian John Cherwonogrodzky called “Ukraine, the good, the bad, the ugly.”

The food, flowers and raffle items were all donated and Cori Fischer, the director of the Veiner Centre, says $3,000 has been raised so far.

“What I really love about this fundraiser is that the entire community came around, supported us in planning this, it’s been so well received,” Fischer said. “We’ve had so many people coming through the centre and because of that amazing support, we are able to donate 100 per cent of the proceeds to the Canadian Red Cross to get to Ukraine.”

Donations are being accepted until the end of the week and can be made in person at the Veiner Centre or on its website.
