Mother Teresa students, staff wearing mismatched socks for World Down Syndrome Day

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Colourful, mismatched socks could be spotted all over Mother Teresa School today.

Students and staff participated in “Rock Your Socks” in honour of World Down Syndrome Day.

The inspiration for wearing mismatched socks comes from the genetic testing done for Down syndrome. The DNA looks like funky socks.

At Mother Teresa School, one class was especially colourful. Local parents Alex and Holly Graham have two sons with Down syndrome and their oldest, Jax, brought in a pair of socks for every student in his class.

“It’s good to get the conversation started,” Alex said. “Especially with youth at that young age, kind of just recognize just like your socks, everyone is different and having those conversations earlier and just having kids know that people like Jax, are different but they’re the same and we can all embrace and celebrate those differences.”

World Down Syndrome Day has been celebrated since 2006 and is always held on March 21 because people with the condition have three copies of the 21st chromosome.
