FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. – United Conservative Party candidate Brian Jean has won a byelection in northern Alberta.

Jean, the co-founder of the party and a former federal Conservative member of Parliament, defeated seven challengers with about two-thirds of the votes to claim the seat in Fort McMurray-Lac La Biche.

Jean won the nomination to run under the United Conservative banner even though he openly campaigned to oust Premier Jason Kenney as party leader.

He has said the party has lost its values and commitment to grassroots democracy under Kenney.

Jean was the leader of Alberta’s Wildrose Party when it merged with the Progressive Conservatives in 2017, and lost the leadership of the newly formed United Conservatives to Kenney.

The party is holding a leadership review of Kenney on April 9.
