Kin 1 arena at the Kinplex has been closed to the public effective immediately

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The City of Medicine Hat has temporarily closed the Kin 1 arena inside the Kinplex effective immediately after ammonia was detected.

“As part of our preventative maintenance and monitoring program, chemical analysis indicated there was ammonia in the brine refrigerant system,” said Jeff Hoglund, manager of building services, in a release.

Hoglund notes that follow-up testing confirmed an equipment failure contained to the system that operates in Kin 1. The leak is contained and no injuries occurred.

City staff and contractors are currently on-site to manage the necessary repairs.

Acting director of the parks and recreation Scott Richter stated, “we are working with our user groups to find other locations so they are able to continue playing during the remainder of their season.”

The Kin 2 rink will remain open to the public and user groups currently booked for events and tournaments.

There are robust ammonia detection and response systems in place to ensure the safety of staff and patrons.

The City of Medicine Hat thanks the community for their patience and understanding.
