Clubs worried about their future under city’s northwest industrial plan

Mar 11, 2022 | 11:58 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Five recreational clubs in the city are pushing back against the proposed Northwest Industrial Area Structure Plan, saying it could spell the end of their organizations.

The fourth phase of the plan covers city land currently leased by the Medicine Hat Rifle and Revolver Club, Medicine Hat Speedway, Medicine Drag Racing Association, Medicine Hat Motocross Society and Medicine Hat RC’ers.

If the bylaw goes through in its current form, that land could be sold to industry and the clubs forced to move. They say millions of dollars have been invested in infrastructure in the area and moving to other areas is likely not feasible.

Some of the clubs have been there for 30 years and their total membership is more than 1,350 this year.

At the March 7 meeting, city council unanimously voted to table a decision on the proposal until the next meeting on March 21.

Randy Adam of the Medicine Hat Rifle and Revolver Club spoke with CHAT News about the clubs’ concerns and changes they would like to see to the proposed bylaw.
