Alberta municipal leaders want referendum on replacing RCMP

Mar 10, 2022 | 11:15 AM

Some municipal leaders say Albertans should be able to cast ballots in a referendum on whether to replace the RCMP with a provincial police force.

Members of Alberta Municipalities have also voted 144-to-34 to reject the proposed models the United Conservative government is considering for a provincial force.

President Cathy Heron says municipal leaders are not able to get questions answered and there’s been no engagement with the government.

Local leaders also want the province to address the root causes of crime and ensure the justice system is adequately resourced.
