MEDICINE HAT, AB – Uplifting messages celebrating women can be spotted at the Medicine Hat Public Library all month long.

Today is International Women’s Day while the whole month is Women’s History Month.

Typically, the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society (MHWSS) host the Bread and Roses Gala this time of year but due to COVID, it was once again cancelled. Instead, they created the Lift Her Up display which features hearts from the MHWSS staff and clients, as well as messages from community members.

Peggy Revell with the women’s shelter says it’s all about empowering and lifting women up and this year’s international theme is break the bias.

“It’s talking about bias and stereotypes and how that leads to discrimination and the domino effect it has on women in this world whether it is income, education, security and safety,” Revell said. “Obviously, at the women’s shelter we care about women’s safety and how that impacts family violence and how anyone can experience family violence, it’s an issue that disproportionately impacts women.”

While the display will be at the library for all of March, Revell says ending discrimination and working towards gender equality are ongoing, year-round efforts.
