FAIRFAX, VA – A Brooks athlete has won gold at her NCAA conference championship in one of track and field’s more grueling events.

Senior Kira Kopec, who represents the University of Massachusetts, defended her 2020 Athletic 10 Conference gold and set a new school record scoring 3,962 points in the pentathlon.

She was the favorite heading into the competition but just focused on pushing hard and doing her best.

“It slowly started to sink in yesterday. I was like ‘oh my gosh I won’”, Kopec said. “I had won in 2020 as well. I think that was my junior year but winning the other day and having the conference record and my new school record, it’s just a lot of emotions but I’m really happy.”

This is likely Kopec’s last year competing in track and field. The microbiology major plans to study for the MCAT this summer with dreams of being a dermatologist.
