Alberta Shuffles Cabinet: Madu moves to labour and immigration, Shandro new justice minister

Feb 25, 2022 | 4:45 PM

EDMONTON, AB– Premier Jason Kenney has announced new changes to cabinet. In a news release, the premier announced the following changes:

  • Tyler Shandro, QC, MLA for Calgary-Acadia and Minister of Labour and Immigration, becomes the Minister of Justice and Solicitor General
  • Kaycee Madu, QC, MLA for Edmonton-South West and minister without a portfolio, becomes the Minister of Labour and Immigration
  • Sonya Savage, QC, MLA for Calgary-North West, continues as Minister of Energy.

The move comes after Kaycee Madu had been suspended after it was learned Madu made a phone call to Edmonton’s police chief regarding a traffic ticket 11 months ago.

A report into his conduct was released, and Madu was found to have attempted to interfere with the administration of justice, but ultimately did not.

” There is a process that the Minister knows well to address questions of police conduct. It does not start with a phone call to the Chief of Police. The very fact that the purpose of the call was to obtain assurance that the police were acting properly rather than going through appropriate channels is an attempt to interfere with the administration of justice,” stated Justice Adele Kent in her decision.

In a statement, premier Kenney thanked Madu for his critical work in addressing racism in Alberta’s Justice system and for ending police carding in Alberta.

”I know that he will continue to be a strong advocate for equality of opportunity. I would like to thank Minister Shandro as well for his work in establishing the Premier’s Summit for Newcomers and for his work in fighting for fairness for newcomers. I am confident that both ministers will continue to work hard to make life better for Albertans,” Kenney said.
