Local school holds their own version of the Quebec Winter Carnival

It was an equally fun and educational day and even included a visit from the iconic mascot, Bonhomme who brought smiles and hugs to students.

Teacher Patrick Page says his students were very excited about all the activities.

“Students are making a sash so the French wore sashes back in the olden times, they’re making castles, they’re making Bonhomme carnival marionettes and a bunch of other stuff,” Page said.

Students also played bingo, had a snowball fight and drank hot chocolate with cookies. But all the fun and games served another purpose, a learning opportunity.

“It teaches them about culture and French heritage, what we use to celebrate and what we celebrate right now,” Page said. “It teaches them about the French roots in Canada.”

Behind the Bonhomme mask is French immersion student Lillie Doud. The seventh-grader wanted to dress up as the beloved snowman as a way to give back to her former school and it reminds her of sweet memories.

“It was really cool because in preschool I remember Bonhomme would walk around and it was really fun,” Doud said.

A day full of smiles and hugs were just as fun for the Bonhomme as it was for the students.

“We love you Bonhomme,” the students shouted.
