Brooks calls for more info on provincial police force proposal

Feb 11, 2022 | 2:46 PM

BROOKS, AB – The City of Brooks is calling for more information on the United Conservative government’s plan for a province-wide police force to replace the RCMP.

The province has been talking with stakeholders about the idea, and that includes a meeting with Brooks city councillors in late January.

But the mayor of Brooks says they failed to get answers to many of their questions.

John Petrie has various concerns about replacing the Mounties with a provincial force, including whether his city would have to cover more costs than it does currently with RCMP service.

Petrie says Brooks city council has sent a letter to the province, calling for more details, and he hopes to hear an answer back quickly.

“Come April or May we’re a year away from the next provincial election. So are they going to be making moves before the provincial election or will it come up after the provincial election,” Petrie said.

The union representing RCMP members, the National Police Federation recently stopped in Brooks and Medicine Hat to voice its concerns with the provincial police force proposal.
