Medicine Hat mayor supports call for municipal input on COVID-19 measures

Feb 7, 2022 | 3:34 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat Mayor Linnsie Clark is supporting a call for municipalities to have a say on easing pandemic restrictions in Alberta.

Premier Jason Kenney is expected to announce this week a timeline for the lifting of the Restrictions Exemption Program and other public health restrictions.

But the mayor of Calgary says a meeting with municipal leaders needs to happen before changes are made.

Jyoti Gondek is concerned the changes may be premature and wants the science and data to be shared.

Medicine Hat’s mayor says Gondek’s request for municipal input on changes to measures is reasonable.

“It is important for municipalities to be consulted on these things. We don’t have the medical expertise when it comes to the health side, the health care side, but there are aspects of whatever we do moving forwards… and certainly, previously, with respect to enforcement and the local economic impacts, it’s important for us to be considered,” Clark told CHAT News.

Last week Kenney spoke of possibly restricting municipalities from enacting their own measures.
