Local anti-mask petitions missing important information, says school official

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A pair of internet petitions have been launched against students wearing masks in public and Catholic schools in Medicine Hat.

Both petitions appear to have been organized by the same person, and both contain the same wording, calling mask mandates harmful and “never-ending.”

The petitions also point to more than a dozen other Alberta school districts that have brought on alternate safety plans instead of masks.

But the superintendent of Medicine Hat’s public schools says the petitions are missing some important information.

“Schools that have been granted this provision by the chief medical officer of health are very small schools in settings where it’s actually possible for them to truthfully say we can distance that far almost all the time. And it just isn’t the case in schools within our city,” Mark Davidson said.

More than 400 people have signed the petitions so far.

CHAT News has reached out to the petition’s organizer but received no response by the time of this publication.
