Plans underway to restart Medicine Hat’s Spectrum in 2022

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Organizers of the Spectrum Festival say they’re looking for an army of volunteers to help them relaunch the start-of-summer festival this year.

Following the event’s cancellation two years in a row because of the pandemic, plans are in motion to hold Spectrum during the first weekend of June.

“We’ve got some of the best summers.. and (the goal is) to really send off that message of ‘summer’s here’ and we’re ready to go. I think it’s something we want to get on board with,” said Spectrum board president Justin Wright.

And while the primary location of the event is once again set for Kin Coulee Park, organizers say they’re planning a more spread out Spectrum this year.

They say they want to make it a community-driven event, not one just focussed on being in Kin Coulee, and they’ll be talking with various historical and tourism agencies about showcasing events or tours during Spectrum.

“As much as it’s going to be music, and fun, and your traditional things you’re going to see at Spectrum, we really want to showcase a lot of what Medicine Hat has to offer in regards to those like, little hidden gems,” Wright said.

Other events in the works include a high school band competition and a hockey tournament.

The festival’s board is looking for volunteers for the board itself and to help hold the event. You can learn more at the Spectrum festival website.
