Medicine Hat doctor says abuse of hospital staff is getting worse

A doctor with the Alberta Medical Association says overworked staff, long wait times and a nearly two-year-long pandemic are making abuse in hospitals even worse.

Dr. Paul Parks says it’s not uncommon for patients and their families to be verbally and sometimes physically abusive.

Parks believes the issue is increasing in all areas of any given hospital.

The Canadian Medical Association estimates in a podcast that more than half of emergency department nurses will be sexually harassed or assaulted this year.
