New gym not expected to be ready for Rattlers this season

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It looks as though the Rattlers teams will be playing away from Medicine Hat College for the rest of the season.

Work began in March on the college’s Health, Wellness and Athletics Expansion project, forcing the Rattlers to make a temporary home at the Big Marble Go Centre.

The work at the college was expected to be finished in December, but supply chain issues related to COVID have caused delays.

“We’ve heard the end of February, sometime in March. I would anticipate that we might be able to get back in that area in March,” says Terry Ballard, the college’s manager of sport and wellness.

New fitness equipment has been ordered and should be in Calgary around the end of January. Ballard says as soon as the new facility is open they’ll get the equipment down here, set it up and hope students will be able to give it a shot before this semester ends.

Ballard says everyone is looking forward to the new facility that will include a new welcome centre, new labs for health and science and a fitness centre twice as big as they had before.

“It’ll be great for our student-athletes but I think more importantly I think it’s going to be great for our community outreach situation,” he says.

“We’re looking forward to being sort of a hub of the college. We just want that action back on campus.”

This is the first phase of a planned multi-year project at the college.
