Spirit of Christmas Feast gives everyone a place to go at Christmas

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Making sure everyone has a place to go at Christmas has been the mission of one group of Hatters for the past nine years.

That hasn’t changed, even amid a second COVID Christmas.

“The Spirit of Christmas Feast was created for one simple reason and that was to give everybody a place to go at Christmas,” says Jeremy Silver, lead co-ordinator and one of the founders of the feast.

This year’s feast will take place at the Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub from 4-8 p.m. on Christmas Day and you will need to show your vaccine QR code to enter.

Delivery and takeaway options are also available.

The menu is a traditional Christmas one, including turkey, stuffing, potatoes and gravy.

Silver says that nine years ago he and the other founders noticed a gap in what was available for people at Christmas. That gap was the middle class and the working poor, he says, who were making just enough money that they couldn’t access social services but at the same time were alone for Christmas.

“And sadly those were our highest suicide demographics. So our group recognized that we were missing that group of people and that’s who the Spirit of Christmas Feast was created for,” Silver says. “It was never designed as a soup kitchen it was always designed for everybody regardless of demographic. We don’t care how much money you have in your bank account we just don’t want you to be alone for Christmas.”
