MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat College’s dean of arts, science and education was honoured recently with the prestigious Stars of Alberta Volunteer Award.

Clay Bos was taken aback by the honour.

“It’s quite an honour, simply because of the pool of recipients that I was in with,” he said. “So incredible work is being done and it’s humbling and proud to be a part of that group.”

Bos was nominated for the award by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta, for which he currently serves as the local chair.

In that role he engages with youth and the public, sharing his knowledge of science and engineering and the accountabilities and responsibilities that come with it.

He also volunteers through his children’s sports and other activities and estimates he volunteers a total of about 500 hours each year.

Bos, who proudly displays the trophy in his office at the college, strives to build a better world as an engineer and as a volunteer.

“My dad mentioned to me that when I was 18 and I was asked to coach and I kind of hemmed and hawwed about it, and he reminded me of all the people that volunteered to get me to where I was, especially with sports and stuff like that,” he said.

“So it was something that he mentioned that if you want to be a good citizen of this world that’s something that you, it’s a responsibility to give back whenever you can.”

Bos is one of 10 people in the province to win the award this year.
