Facebook page lighting up with local Christmas light displays

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A local Facebook page is shining almost as bright as the houses it is trying to show off.

My96 afternoon host Shaun O’Neill created Medicine Hat and Area Christmas Lights on Nov. 30, and the page has grown to more than 700 members.

“I know people have made lists over the past few years but I was shocked that there was no Facebook page for it because of course, Facebook is where everyone goes for everything,” he explains.

“So I just thought I’d start one up so people could share, especially share the actual pictures of all the work they put in. Because people put in a ton of work and I feel like it’s really ramped up this year. And after you know not a fantastic year, it was a good way to spread a little extra Christmas joy.”

Photos of about 20 displays have been posted so far, as well as lists of displays sorted by neighbourhood and those set to music.

Shaun says people have been enjoying sharing what they’ve been doing and others have enjoyed looking at the page to find out where the displays are, particularly ones they can take the kids to see.

He says he’s slacked on his Christmas lights, so he’ll definitely be taking a tour of the houses.

“Even if you can’t get out and see it (in person), you can cruise through Facebook and see the festive lights,” he says.

O’Neill is changing the group’s cover photo each day to highlight a different house.
