Decision expected soon on possible new industrial project in Medicine Hat

A decision should be known within weeks if Medicine Hat will be home to a new hemp processing plant.

The 200,000 square ft. facility will help develop hemp-based panelling for the R.V. industry by Kelowna-based Inca Renewables.

Medicine Hat is one of two potential cities being considered for the Canadian based section of the project, Saskatoon being the other. The second part of the operation will be set up in Indiana.

Company officials say they’re currently looking at the northwest industrial area as a potential site.

However, they’ve ruled out using any existing facilities for the project, such as the vacant Aurora Sun complex.

“It’s really important with this kind of operation, you build to suit (the building); partly because of size, partly because of the need to have zero dust. Hemp as you know can be quite flammable,” Camille Saltman, chief marketing & sales officer with Inca said.

City hall has confirmed in a statement talks are ongoing with Inca about the project, but would not comment further.

Inca officials say they plan to decide on where the plant will be located by year’s end.
