2021 Poppy Campaign in Medicine Hat expected to beat last year’s total

MEDICINE HAT — A final total for this year’s Legion Poppy campaign in Medicine Hat is still being calculated, but all indications are it will exceed last year efforts.

This was the second year the Poppy Campaign operated under pandemic restrictions.

That meant fewer tables and volunteers were available.

Just 3 tables were in the community this past month, and the Cadets were unable to assist with the campaign.

However Robertson Memorial Branch 17 Legion President Sheila Donner says they overcame the challenges and expect to beat last year’s total by several thousand dollars.

“So considering we had fewer tables, shortened the hours, it’s amazing how everyone supported the Poppy Campaign and we thank the citizens of Medicine Hat,” says Donner.

The addition of contactless payment machines was also a major factor according to Donner, as she saw people making multiple donations at one time because of the tap machine.

When all is said and done, it’s anticipated this years campaign will top $68 thousand for local veterans programming.
