MEDICINE HAT — Today is the first day of meteorological winter, but temperatures don’t feel very wintry.

That’s because of the Chinook winds blasting the Foothills in Southern Alberta.

Peak gusts approaching 140 kilometres per hour were recorded overnight.

Wind at Waterton topped out at 137 kph, with another blast at Pincher Creek hitting 124.

Lethbridge had a peak gust of 117, while Medicine Hat’s peak wind gust was 84 kilometres an hour at midnight.

Wind warnings are posted for all of Southern Alberta south of Calgary, with winter storm warnings in place for Banff and Jasper national parks.
