‘A schwack of cash’: Medalta holding big 50/50 raffle

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medalta won’t be going black and white this year but someone will see a lot of green.

For the second straight year, the historic site is not holding its signature fundraising event the Black & White Gala.

In its place is a 50/50 raffle with a minimum guaranteed prize of $10,000. Depending on how many tickets are sold the prize could be as much as $150,000.

Executive director Mike Onieu says it’s a great opportunity to get your Christmas shopping paid for.

“Although we would be winners in this venture, the prize winner is going to get a schwack of cash right before the holidays. So I think that’s the attraction of this raffle,” he said.

The last day to buy tickets is Dec. 17 and the draw will happen the following day. Tickets range from one for $10 to 100 for $100.

A raffle instead of the gala is not the preference for Onieu or anyone at Medalta. But, as they have for the past 20 months, they are making the best of the situation.

The money raised for Medalta will be used to keep it up and running, including for basic infrastructure repairs and maintain programming.

He adds Medalta is not the only group doing a raffle or struggling with fundraising.

“So I would encourage everyone to support not only Medalta but all of the other charitable organizations that are doing similar events,” he says. “The entire sector really needs support right now and we’re very happy that people are willing to do so.”
