Chilly weather or not, fire restriction extended in Cypress County

DUNMORE, AB – Feels more like winter?

It just might but that doesn’t mean wildfires aren’t still a concern in the area.

“A lack of precipitation since the start of July and the dry windy conditions we’ve had (lead themselves) to dry hazard conditions,” said Jeffrey Dowling, director of municipal services with Cypress County.

As result of the parched landscape, the county has extended a fire permits restriction, in effect since the end of October.

Dowling says the permits won’t be issued by the county until more moisture falls.

If an allowance is granted by the county, landowners can burn wood materials such as tree branches, typically from November until the end of March.

“From moment to moment we assess the conditions and the situation and then determine whether it’s appropriate to issue fire burn permits or not,” Dowling said.

The county also put a hold on issuing fire burn permits last March because of dry conditions.
