Late lead evaporates for Tigers in overtime loss to Moose Jaw

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Through five games, the duality of the Medicine Hat Tigers is becoming more stark.

Playing some of their best hockey of the season, the Tigers have struggled to string together wins dropping their fifth in a row Saturday night 3-2 in overtime to the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Medicine Hat held onto a late third period lead, before Moose Jaw’s Jagger Firkus scored to send the game to overtime where Denton Mateychuk would complete the comeback for the visitors.

Coming off a 3-2 loss in Swift Current the night prior, the Tigers fell behind early to the Warriors with Ryder Korczak opening the scoring from the slot on Moose Jaw’s second shot of the game 3:28 into the first period.

Near the end of the first however the Tigers would find the equalizer, with Ashton Ferster tipping a Bogdans Hodass shot from the half wall past Carl Tetachuk for his second of the year.

Medicine Hat took their first lead of the night three minutes into the second frame on the power play, as Noah Danielson back from taking a knee-on-knee hit on Friday ripped a wrist shot from the top of the face-off circle to make it a 2-1 game.

The Tabbies held onto that lead until the dying minutes of regulation, when Firkus finished off a pretty passing play led by Mateychuk to force overtime.

Mateychuk served as hero for the Warriors less than three minutes into the extra frame, curling and shooting from the face-off dot with a shot that beat Beckett Langkow to extend the Tigers’ losing streak.

Langkow had 32 saves in the loss, while Tetachuk made 24 stops for the Warriors.

The Tigers were without star forward Lukas Svejkovsky on Saturday night, who was listed as a game-time decision.

Medicine Hat’s record dropped to 4-6-2-1 with the loss and will have a chance at ending the skid next Saturday when they open a home-and-home series with the Calgary Hitmen at Co-Op Place.
