“I passed out, people were pushing against me”- Concert-goer on deadly fest incident

HOUSTON– At least 8 people are dead after a mass casualty event at a music festival state-side, Houston’s mayor confirmed during a news conference today.

“Last night was tragic on many different levels, and this is a very, very active investigation and we’ll probably be at it for some time to determine exactly what happened,” Mayor Sylvester Turner said.

He added the youngest casualty in the incident at Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival was 14 years old.

Another casualty was 16 years old, two more were 21 years old, another pair were 23, and the age of the last casualty is unknown.

City of Houston Fire Chief Samuel Pena said chaos began when the crowd began to “compress” toward the front of the stage around 9:15 p.m., setting off panic, with some attendees passing out because they couldn’t breathe.

Video of the event shows emergency crews attending to an unconscious concert goer.

Turner says there was a sell-out crowd on hand of 50000 people.

A total of 25 people were transported to hospital, and Turner says 13 remain hospitalized. No one has been reported missing.

Madeline Eskins, an ICU nurse, told FOX News the scene was “absolutely insane”.

Eskins also wrote of a “terrible experience” at Astroworld on Instagram Saturday morning.

“I passed out because people were pushing up against me so much that I couldn’t breath. Sam got people to apparently crowd surf my unconscious body to the security guard and I got carried to a little section..” Eskins wrote.

The mayor of Houston spoke of the rareness of Friday night’s events.

“I’m not aware of any incident of this kind that has taken place at any of the special events (in our area).. pretty much in the last 40 years where anybody has lost life. Now.. we have events where there may have been a crowd rush or somebody had to be ejected or somebody’s been injured but nothing of this magnitude that any of us can recall,” Turner said.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott released a statement, saying, “What happened at Astroworld Festival last night was tragic, and our hearts are with those who lost their lives & those who were injured. Thank you to the first responders and good Samaritans who were on site & immediately tended to those who were injured in the crowd.”
