Flu shot demand down compared to previous years

MEDICINE HAT, AB – In addition to the COVID-19 vaccine, the flu vaccine is also readily available but Alberta Health Services and a local pharmacy say demand is way down.

It’s still early in the influenza season, with only three confirmed cases so far. AHS says only 289,990 doses of the flu shot have been given, compared to 597,110 at this time last year.

They believe this is due to several factors, including vaccine fatigue. But it’s not accurate to compare influenza seasons directly until a full season’s data is complete.

At Greg’s Remedy Pharmacy in Medicine Hat, pharmacist Greg Bueckert sees a similar trend.

He says it’s been quiet when it comes to administering flu shots.

“It’s busier this year than last year but nowhere near as busy as pre-covid days where everybody felt they were out and around and feel they should be protected,” Bueckert said. “Right now, we still have a lot of people staying close to home and most probably feel it’s not necessary.”

Greg’s Pharmacy will be offering flu shots on a walk-in basis until demand runs out.
