Province announces funding for 16 emissions reduction projects

Nov 1, 2021 | 3:24 PM

New investments in emissions reduction projects will fund 16 projects in Alberta that the government says will cut almost seven million tonnes of emissions by 2030.

The province will use up to $176 million from the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) system and federal Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund (LCELF).

“Alberta continues to show leadership by using technology in practical ways to reduce emissions and combat climate change,” says Premier Jason Kenney in a news release. “These investments will help us grow our economy and pave the way to an even brighter future for all Albertans by building on Alberta’s strong foundation as a responsible and innovative energy leader.”

The province says large operations across sectors in Alberta are benefiting from the funding, including oil and gas, chemicals and fertilizers, cement and concrete, forestry and agriculture, electricity and manufacturing.

One of the 16 projects to receive funding is Elemental Energy Renewables’ Chappice Lake Solar-Storage project, about 20 kilometres northeast of Medicine Hat on Highway 41.

The project includes a 15MW PV installation with a first-in-kind DC connected flow battery. According to Emissions Reduction Alberta, the project will showcase this exciting technology which will unlock more of Alberta’s existing grid for renewable energy generation, enable daily bulk energy shifting of project output, and demonstrate the applicability of intelligent dispatch algorithms.

Funding is being delivered through Emissions Reduction Alberta’s Shovel-Ready Challenge. The government says the funding will support about 5,600 jobs while injecting $2 billion into Alberta’s economy.
