City crews prepping for the onslaught of winter

Oct 29, 2021 | 5:22 PM

Judging from the forecast, accumulation of snowfall in Medicine Hat Friday likely won’t amount to much, but the city’s snow-clearing operation is already in gear, just in case.

The city’s road works department says preparation for winter has been underway for a few weeks.

Graders, sidewalk machines, and dump trucks are being modified for winter weather work.

But that’s not to say the onus isn’t on residents to take care as winter weather slowly starts to descend on Medicine Hat.

“With every Canadian city, drivers tend to forget that first snowfall and the risks associated with it.,” Jeremy Petryshyn, manager of surface for city assets said.

“If we do see accumulation overnight., give yourself lots of time to get to your destination in the morning and be careful of your footing if the ground is covered in snow because there can be slippery sections,” Petryshyn added.

He also reminds Hatters they have 24 hours to clean snow from the sidewalks in front of their houses.

Environment Canada says a mix of snow with rain should end near midnight Friday with an accumulation of about 2 cm.

A low of minus 2 overnight is anticipated with a wind chill of minus 7.
