Bite into Savour the Southeast and support local eateries

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Get out your bib and your stretchy pants. The two-week foodie favourite Savour the Southeast is back on Monday.

“This is a great opportunity for the community to support local restaurants and help them to support local producers,” says Jace Anderson, executive director of Tourism Medicine Hat. “So it connects everything from farm to plate and it’s one of the strengths, one of the benefits of living in this part of the world.”

This year there are 16 local restaurants, cafes and breweries participating and each is creating and celebrating a Savour special that highlights locally produced products.

He says everyone is looking forward to the list and the variety of what the participants are going to come up with for their Savour the Southeast plate.

Anderson says it’s easy to show your support.

“When you walk into a restaurant between Nov. 1 and 14, restaurant, coffee shop, brewery and you see them displaying the Savour the Southeast material then ask them what their Savour special is,” he says.

The response from restaurants, cafes and breweries continues to grow each year, Anderson says.

Part of that he attributes a natural growth and word-of-mouth since the first Savour the Southeast nine years ago.

But Anderson thinks there’s also a more immediate reason.

“COVID has been hard on everybody and we’re looking forward to opportunities to support, to engage and to get out into the community in a way that’s appropriate and safe based on all of our different perspectives,” he says.

The participants are Cafe Verve, Copper Leaf Cafe, Fatuma’s Ethiopian Cafe, Grit City Distillery, Hell’s Basement Brewery, Inspire Cafe, Izote Latin Cocina, MadHatter Coffee Roastery, Medicine Hat Brewing Company, Rosewood Bistro, Skinny’s Smokehouse, Station Coffee Company, Takumi, Travois Ale Works, Whiskey District and Zucchini Blossom Market and Cafe.

Savour the Southeast is presented by Tourism Medicine Hat, Verge Economic Development and the Medicine Hat Chamber of Commerce.
