Successful 2021 at Gas City Campground, even better expected for 2022

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Neither pandemic restrictions or the spectre of construction at the Gas City campground this past summer appear to have kept people from enjoying the facility.

Scott Richter, manager of business and innovation for parks and recreation with the City of Medicine Hat, says they were at 95 per cent capacity for July and August, and September was also a strong month.

All this as work was underway to convert the remaining unserviced sites in the campground to full service.

Richter says other than a few minor noise complaints, most people understood the work will make for a better camping season next year.

“It’s looking great and promising, we’re upgrading to full service as we know there’s a market out there for full service units, and it was clear based on the occupancy we had this summer we will be able to fill that campground next year,” says Richter.

In addition to the new full service sites, Richter says there will be two new comfort cabins next year.

As well, he says upgrades to the trail system near the campground will create new interest for mountain biking, and there will also be opportunities for tenting at Echo Dale Regional Park in the summer of 2022.
