Poppy campaign ready to roll

Oct 25, 2021 | 1:10 PM

MEDICINE HAT — Canada’s governor-general will receive the first poppy for this year on Wednesday, followed by Alberta’s lieutenant-governor on Thursday.

After that, individual poppy campaigns will begin across Canada on Friday.

For the second year in a row, the Poppy Campaign will be challenged by the pandemic restrictions.

But poppies will still be available outside of Shoppers Drug Mart and Safeway at the Medicine Hat Mall, Canadian Tire, Walmart and at various businesses in the city.

There will also be a special box at the Medicine Hat College, where people can tap a credit or debit card to get a poppy.

Robertson Memorial Branch 17 Legion president Sheila Donner says their Poppy Campaign has always been well received.

“It’s wonderful to live in a city such as Medicine Hat, where people do appreciate the efforts and sacrifices made by our veterans and we’ve always had a very successful poppy campaign,” says Donner.

“Even though we have limitations of COVID, the volunteers still come out and the public still supports the campaign,” adds Donner.

This year’s Remembrance Day services will begin on First Street in front of the Esplanade with a parade of veterans, Legion members, and representatives from CFB Suffield, BATUS, and city police and fire services.

They will march to Riverside Veterans’ Memorial Park for the traditional Remembrance Day service at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11.

The public will be invited to attend, keeping physical distancing in mind.
