MEDICINE HAT, AB – As the Medicine Hat and District Food Bank begins operations in its new building in the old fire station on Maple Avenue, the non-profit has changed its name.

The former food bank is now the Root Cellar, Food and Wellness Hub.

The name change comes as the non-profit organization shifts to a new concept, changing the focus to addressing the root cause of food insecurity.

At the new location, new and old amenities are now in the same building making it easier to help more people.

The Root Cellar will still operate as an emergency food pantry but will also offer cooking and budgeting classes, food collaboration programs, healthy bundles and brown bag lunches.

Marketing and events manager Melissa Mullis is excited about the name change and all the resources at the new location.

“We want to find out what’s causing people to fall into hard times or what is causing people to have troubles and how are we going to fix it and how are we going to help them get out of it,” Mullus said.

The Root Cellar also named a new executive director. Former operations manager Margo Dick is replacing Celina Simmons. Dick has worked at the food bank for the last four years.
