Defeated councillors reflect on their time serving Medicine Hat

Oct 19, 2021 | 4:31 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Two incumbent councillors, Brian Varga and Phil Turnbull, campaigning for their third terms were not re-elected on Monday.

While disappointed with the results, Turnbull said he’s grateful for his time representing the citizens of Medicine Hat.

“I think I helped to contribute as one member of council to move our city forward when it comes to operational savings, to move our city forward on economic development, move our city forward on strategic plans for energy and examining the market going forward,” Turnbull said.

Turnbull plans to help fundraise for the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in 2026 and spend more time with his grandchildren.

Brian Varga wrote a heartfelt post on Facebook. He said he was lucky enough to serve on city council for eight wonderful years.

He said he learned a lot, made lots of great relationships and became a better version of himself. While last night didn’t go the way he would have liked, it’s time to look forward to the future.

Varga thanks everyone who supported him and wishes good luck to the new mayor and council.
