Stitching for sentiment: Local woman’s hobby creates gifts from important memories

MEDICINE HAT,AB- What started as a hobby last year for a local woman in quarantine has since grown into a new business.

Mackenzie Johnson is the founder of Edward and Elliette, an embroidery company that specializes in customized designs.

“ I was stuck at home with my kids, all day, every day and it started to feel a bit like groundhog day the movie and so I needed to find something that I enjoyed doing, that was just for me,” she said.

She bought her first embroidery kit off Amazon in April 2020 and through a lot of patience and perseverance she learned the tricks of the trade.

Now, Johnson’s main specialty is creating sentimental pieces for people to enjoy from family portraits, to weddings to babies.

“ A lot of the times people have a favorite photograph or just a time that they want to remember and having it embroidered can be really special.”

Johnson said the opportunity to create something that resembles a very important part is very humbling, and each piece comes out different.

“ A couple of pieces that I’ve made, it was kind of a memorial piece, where someone in the family had died. Or it was a childhood home that they wanted done,” she said.
