MEDICINE HAT, AB – It will be a few years later than originally planned but the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games are coming to Medicine Hat in 2026.

The city announced the news this morning in Medicine Hat City Council Chambers.

“This is great news for our community. We will prove that Medicine Hat was the right choice for the host city,” said Brian Varga, chairman of the Games Organizing Committee, in a release. “The work starts now and all of us, the board, the volunteers and the community will strive to make this the best games ever.”

Special Olympics Canada CEO Sharon Bollenbach says they are thrilled Medicine Hat will host the games.

“Having previously hosted Special Olympics events we know Medicine Hat will go above and beyond to deliver an exceptional games experience for the hundreds of athletes participating at Special Olympics Canada’s signature sports competition.”

Medicine Hat was to host the 2022 games, before they were cancelled due to the impacts of COVID-19.
