MEDICINE HAT, AB – At McBrides Bakery, the pumpkin pies are prepped.

Pies are one hot item, and for the team it is go-time to ensure they are ready for tasting come turkey time.

“Well, there are a lot of classic Thanksgiving items that people have to have you have to have pumpkin pie, you have to have buns for your turkey sandwiches the next day, and so of course people have been coming to us for more than 50 years for Thanksgiving weekend,” said co-owner Carole Hillson.

While turkey and stuffing is the traditional Thanksgiving meal, it has evolved over the years.

“Oh I’m getting sick of the turkey but I’m thankful for turkey,” said one woman.

“We are having prime rib this year, so no turkey this year,” another woman added.

Mike’s Meats has been fueling some Thanksgiving foodies wanting to buck the trend for decades.

“Most of the time people are coming here for steak and having thanksgiving steak, and we also do like a pulled turkey so it is like a turkey chicken mix kind of thing, you can do it on a bun,” said Mike’s Meats’ Mark Steiner.

For some people, Thanksgiving will be a quiet weekend. But for others, it will be spent doing some more unique activities.

“I am making a pumpkin person, and I am going to be taking her out to explore the city and show her around,” one woman said.

“My husband and I are going to have a craft weekend. My husband is going to do some sketching and I am going to do some sewing,” said another woman.

Either way, with more than 75 per cent of the province fully vaccinated, for those people, it will be a reunion with family and friends they haven’t seen for a while.

“She just came home from Saskatoon, she goes to school there. My Brother is coming from B.C, and it will be good to see everyone again,” said one woman

All to give thanks for what they are thankful for this year.

“There’s lots to be thankful for there always is. Our health, happiness, family,” said one man.
